Using Subdomains -
The Decision Depends On You
The opinion on using subdomains differs from individual to individual.
Using subdomain depends on one's approach to internet marketing. A
subdomain is a second level of the main domain. The URL of the main domain
will look like this: www.yourwebsitename.com and the subdomain will look
like this:http://subdomain.yourwebsitename.com. Subdomain do not have
www at the front.
Most business people and business houses don't like the idea of
subdomain. They think the sub-domain won't look nice and it won't derive
the reputation as a main domain. Some disadvantages like having a prefix
before the main domain name and chances of bots and index spiders of
search engines ignoring it discourage the use of subdomains.
If
your main domain is getting banned, the sub domain will also get
banned. This will happen if the main domain violates the agreements
signed with the ISP provider. Mostly such things happen to adult content
sites.
But it is not a bad idea to have sub-domains. You can develop each
subdomain as a separate entity with its own index or home page. Big
names on the internet are using sub domains. But the brand value of
these names will offset the aversion among the browsers over the sub
domains.
The big time individual internet marketers who establish themselves as
guru in their own field won't like to use the subdomain for different
categories or services. Using subdomain will affect their credibility
and their authority. They fear that seeing so many subdomains for their
main domain over the internet will create an impression that he/she is
promoting all and sundry. In such a situation creating trust will be
difficult.
When comes to indexing and ranking the search engine spiders and bots
won't prejudice the subdomains. If your sub domain is perfectly search
engine optimized, it will rank well. If your website has a lot of
categories, you can create subdomain for each category and submit it to
search engines.
You can get good ranking for each subdomain. Create home page or index
for each subdomain. The search engine would see each sub domain as a new
site as you have created a separate home page for each one of them.
Instead of sub domain if you create sub folder for each category, the
search engine will take it as one set of information of the main domain,
for each category.
Using sub domains avoids separate hosting as most of the hosting
services offer hosting for a good number of subdomains along with the
main domain. It is up to you to decide on using sub domain. Analyze your
niche field, the marketing conditions and how you are going to establish
yourself. This will help you whether to use subdomains or not.
